It's been a little while since I did a food blog post but recently I got the chance to catch up with my cousin over some savoury croissants from the new Gran Cafe that's just opened before Christmas on Duke Street. It's the second location in Liverpool and is only a few minutes walk from the big John Lewis in Liverpool One so it's the perfect place to stop either for some post shopping food or sweet treat to get you energised ready for a mooch around town.
I was originally invited along to the opening event for the Duke Street location before Christmas but because of work I couldn't make it in time so they kindly let me come in to check it out later in the week on my day off to try it out for myself. Gran Cafe was founded over 10 years ago by the lovely Paolo and Donato, combining delicious Italian cuisine made with local produce. They have everything from coffee, cakes, pastries, and some delicious Italian delicacies.
When I met my cousin, we had a little after work pre-Christmas catch up as she no longer lives nearby. Initially we were tempted in to try out their new savoury croissants but then we got tempted by the sweet treats that they offer. We couldn't decide on which coffee to go for so one of the servers recommended two of their newest creations, the nutella latte and the pistachio latte. Of course as soon as the nutella latte was mentioned, we both immediately said yes to that one and believe me it tasted even better than it looks in that pictures.
The savoury croissants did not disappoint, they're £9.50 each and come in 11 different variations for you to choose from. I ended up going for the Benedict croissant and my cousin went for the Bolognese croissant. We were in awe when these came out, both came on a circular croissant sandwich which I loved cause I'm used to the traditional crescent moon shape, I even tried the croissant on it's own and was really impressed that it had such a delicious, buttery taste. I legit want to go back and just buy some of the croissants on their own. I loved the combination of the bacon, poached eggs and hollandaise sauce on the croissant, usually when I have this type of savoury breakfast item, it's on something like an english muffin which is quite stodgy but having it on a croissant was so light, I loved it.
Of course before we left, the lovely folks at Gran Cafe tempted us with another drink and something sweet to finish off the meal. It was so hard to choose something sweet but we ended up going a gelato and cake to split between us. If you go for nothing else, go get the Kinder Bueno gelato, it was out of this world so good. Like I wish they sold cartons of this stuff good! We also went for the black forest cake which was such a cute individualised size which is the perfect finish with a coffee to your meal.
Italian cuisine is one of my favourites so Gran Cafe is going to be one of my go-to's for delicious Italian food and treats in Liverpool. I just wish that they'd open one on the Wirral now! I'd highly recommend that you head along next time you're in town and try it for yourself.
