I'm on a bit of a hunt for the remainder of 2023 to find some really cute food spots that you're able to relax in with your friends or family but also have some fussy eater friendly options to help give myself, my friends and all of you guys some great options to try out next time you're thinking of going out for food. Recently, I was kindly invited along to The Watering Can in Liverpool as they had recently changed their lunch menus and added in some extras to their sandwiches menu. On the day, I was having some family time so I took my mum along to try it out as she tends to stick to the same places when she goes out for lunch.
The Watering Can is located on Greenbank Road in L18 and is open Monday-Sunday, 9am-7pm. It's located right at one of the entrances to Greenbank Park so it's perfect if you want to go for a walk in the park then have lunch, getting a coffee and snacks whilst the kids play or even getting a coffee and going for a walk around the park with the dog. The restaurant is glass fronted and filled with lots of greenery and flowers which makes it incredibly pretty to sit in either their indoor or outdoor seating and you get views of the park which makes it perfect for enjoying when we finally get some rare sunshine in the UK. Head Chef Samantha creates her menus to feature seasonal-produce and are inspired by The Watering Can's beautiful surroundings.
I was so excited to try out The Watering Can menu as I've seen pictures on their social menu and the meals looked so delicious. I also like that they're constantly adapting their menu to feature seasonal produce. We very much lucked out as it was bright sunny weather when we visited so we got to see it with the sides open. Whilst we were stuck with choosing what to have for lunch, we got an iced coffee cause I'm always tired and my mum went for one of the flavoured iced teas.
We decided to try out the starters and some of their new sandwiches that have come out for summer. To start off we both went for the mini chicken tikka skewers which came with sumac red onions, mango chutney, raita dressing and mooli salad. I was so impressed with these as the chicken was seasoned perfectly and was great as someone who isn't great with spice. I am getting full quickly at the moment so this starter was the perfect size without being too much for a main. You could also get a bunch of starters/sides if you wanted to all pick at dishes and try new things.
The Watering Can have recently changed up their sandwich menu so whilst we were tempted by some of the mains on the main menu, we both ended up going for one of the new sandwiches. My mum went for the posh fish finger sandwich which just reminds me of my childhood as my mum loved fish finger sandwiches (don't know if this is just a northern thing) but this posh version came with beer battered fish, lettuce and homemade tartare sauce, all on a toasted brioche bun. My mum has never had beer battered fish before so she was a bit unsure because of the beer batter which honestly I can't even taste much of a difference between normally battered and beer tasted but she was pleasantly surprised at how good it tasted. I ended up going for the new chicken Caesar baguette with some garlic and parmesan fries on the side which even as a fussy eater I was surprised how much I liked this. It was chicken breast, crispy bacon, lettuce fresh parmesan and a Caesar dressing, all on a toasted demi-baguette. Now I won't lie, the baguette was absolutely delicious but half way through the chicken Caesar I got too full (mainly because I forget how much bread bloats me) so I ended up taking the other half home with me and had it for dinner later that day.
I really love how much attention to detail they put in at The Watering Can, even down to things like having the fries come in small ceramic plant pots and having their desserts all made by local artisan bakers which I can confirm that we took a couple of these home with us to have mid-afternoon with a cuppa. I was so impressed by the new additions to the lunch menu and I'm going to have to head back and try out the rest of the menu and have a little stroll in the park whilst we still have some sun this summer.
