Checking My Eye Health | Specsavers Kirkby

Danielle Levy, Specsavers, Specsavers Kirkby, lifestyle blogger, Liverpool blogger, Wirral blogger,
It has been far too many years since I got my eyes checked, we're talking about pre-covid times. I have a family history of vision problems and type 2 diabetes and it's so important that I look after my eye health and deal with things sooner rather than later so I jumped at the chance to head into Specsavers in Kirkby Liverpool to check my eye health and get myself some new glasses.

The Specsavers in Kirkby Liverpool is situated inside the Kirkby Shopping Centre and is a really big spacious location so you've got plenty of room to get your eyes tested, choose new glasses, pick up your contacts or even have your hearing tested (they even offer ear wax removal services which is quicker than waiting to get it on the NHS).

When I arrived to the Kirkby Specsavers, I was welcomed in by the lovely Aisha and Joanne then talked through the different services that they offer and logged my details into the database as I was completely new to Specsavers. Aisha talked me through the different scans Specsavers can complete on your eyes to monitor your eye health and pick up issues sooner rather than later, they can also see you for emergent issues regarding your eye so instead of you spending your time sat in A&E, you can see them first and they can diagnose and refer where appropriate to the necessary people. Whilst I was at the store, Joanne completed the Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) test which takes a 3D image of your eye which helps them to monitor the health of your eyes in greater detail which is perfect for those with issues that relate to their eyes in their family. This OCT scans are designed for those 25 or over, takes a matter of seconds to perform and can help detect conditions like glaucoma, detached retina, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and macular holes up to 4 years earlier than traditional methods.

The lovely Alicia completed my eye test (which if you book online you can get the eye test for only £10), we went through my various medical conditions and medications I take as well as any history of eye issues in my family and any problems I noticed recently with my vision. I must say that Specsavers Kirkby has some of the most high-tech eye testing equipment I've ever seen when having an eye test. No more feeling uncomfortable from having the optician lingering what felt like an inch away from your face, they do it all via a machine that is swung into position then my lovely optician Alicia sat opposite controlling it. For someone that goes to a million and one medical appointments that can get very stressful, the whole process with Alicia was relaxed and she really put me at ease. Once the eye test was finished, Alicia went through the results and also wrote down my new prescription for me and when I'd next need my eyes testing.

It turns out that I have one eye that is short sighted and one that is long sighted and because I haven't worn glasses as consistently as I should have my eye muscles have had to over compensate and strain to allow me to see properly which is not good for them at all. Alicia recommended that I build up to wearing when I'm reading and using screens then using my sunglasses when I'm driving and it shouldn't be long before my eyes adjust to them.

It then came time to choose what glasses to go for, Aisha kindly talked me through the different ranges they have as well the deals that Specsavers currently have on glasses. I decided to go for their 2 for 1 deal where you can choose two pairs of glasses (one can be sunglasses) and get the second pair completely free, this applies to their basic range but also to their sunglasses range. After much deliberation and a lot of help from Aisha, I managed to pick out a pair of normal glasses and a pair of sunglasses, both newly in from Marc Jacobs both in a gorgeous tortoiseshell colour. For my sunglasses, we decided to go for the polarising lenses which you can add onto your sunglasses £59 a pair. Having this added onto your lenses helps eliminate glare from horizontal surfaces, gives you 100% UV protection and is perfect for driving.

I had my appointment with Specsavers in Kirkby on a Friday and by the following Wednesday they had already arrived back in store for me to collect. They then kindly shipped my glasses straight to me and they arrived first thing Friday morning. I couldn't believe how quickly my glasses came but also how friendly everyone at Specsavers Kirkby were and how easy they made getting your eyes tested (something which I've put off doing cause it seemed like loads of faff in the past). I'm over the moon with my glasses and will be heading back when it's time for my 2 year check up. Don't forget to book in with Specsavers Kirkby, get your £10 eye test (if you book on the Specsavers website) and let them show you how simple and quick it is to take care of your eye health.

When did you last get your eyes tested?

Speak to you next time!
