Why You Need Retinol In Your Skincare Routine | Dermalogica Retinol Clearing Oil

I remember being a teenager and the first thing about skincare I can recall was the whole cleanse, tone and moisturise routine, but now being in my late 20's my knowledge of skincare is just growing and growing. As my knowledge of skincare has evolved something I've been looking into trying out is retinols as it seems to be the wonder product that's on everyone's lips and I got the opportunity to try out Dermalogica's latest retinol launch so it couldn't have been more perfectly timed to slip it into my skincare routine.

What Is Retinol?
Retinol is a form of vitamin A which helps promote skin renewal and enhances collagen production as well as lessening fine lines, wrinkles and age spots to give you firmer, smoother and more evenly-toned skin. Because your collagen production starts to decline during your 30's, retinols are usually recommended to be added into your skincare routine when you enter into your 30's as it helps with the effects of reduced collagen production, however you can actually add it into your skincare routine in your 20's as a preventative measure rather than to cure fine lines and wrinkles. It's important to remember that retinol is a highly-reactive molecule meaning that it can start to breakdown and loose its potency with contact to sunlight, so retinol serums and creams are generally recommended to be used at night and you must make sure that you're using SPF during the day.

Dermalogica Retinol Clearing Oil
Dermalogica's latest launch into the world of retinol is their Retinol Clearing oil which not only is designed to help with fine lines, wrinkles and age spots, it's also designed to help clear breakouts and actively nourish your skin. Their formula is vegan and cruelty free and is priced at £69 for a 30ml bottle.

  • Time-released retinol ~ to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and age spots.
  • Salicylic acid ~ helps to stimulate natural exfoliation and reduce breakouts.
  • Argan, Rosehip seed & Golden Jojoba oil ~ helps to soothe, nourish and protect your skin.
Now I know that I'm only in my late 20's but since my late teens I've suffered with fine lines or as I call them expression lines and nothing has really made any difference to them. I unfortunately still suffer with spots which I remember being in my teens and looking forward so much to growing up and not suffering from spots any longer so I'm always looking for products that'll help me tackle them and thankfully the Retinol Clearing oil does both in one which is perfect because sometimes I get a bit girl lazy and don't do a full on skincare routine so having one product that targets my fine lines as well as my break outs is perfect for me.

Something I have learnt with retinol is that if you have more sensitive skin you have to slowly build up your skin to get used to it so I've been using a couple of drops every other night and slowly building up to the 6-10 drops Dermalogica recommend. I noticed I had a little bit of redness on my cheeks when I first started to use it which settled down within a couple of days as my skin got used to it and it's been not only helping me with breakouts and some fine lines that I've started to get on my forehead (which have kindly popped up because I spent far too long staring at my laptop without my glasses on), it's also helped me with some scarring I've had from previous breakouts around my mouth/chin (I'm 100% that girl that can't leave spots alone!). I'm excited to see the improvement from using it long-term as I'm already noticing some great improvements in my skin already from just using it for a couple of weeks.
