Wheeler's Of St James's

Great new places to eat in Liverpool are forever popping up on my radar and Wheeler's of St James's was the next restaurant on my hit list to try out. I think 99% of the places I go out to eat are right smack bang in the city centre so I was really excited to get an invite to Wheeler's of St James's to push me out of my food comfort zone and start trying out some new places to eat around the docks!

Wheeler's of St James's is one of Macro Pierre White's incredible restuarants that is situated in the Kings Docks on Liverpool's waterfront, smack bang right next to the arena and convention centre. The restaurant is situated in The Pullman hotel and has been open since December last year, despite being part of the hotel you would never actually guess that when you are there dining! Whilst Wheeler's of St James's is based on the original Wheeler's restaurant from 1856 and they have built up their reputation with seafood being a key part of their menu, having classic seafood dishes with that incredible Macro Pierre White twist. Don't fret if you aren't a seafood lover, their menu also has some amazing meat and veggie dishes as well so you can go out for dinner with even the fussiest of eaters and there will still be something for everyone!

For once I ended up not bringing Sam (I know even I'm shocked, she is my go-to plus one!), but I did bring one of my good friends from work Jules. After I got stuck in traffic and slightly lost from the car park and Jules had google maps sending her to the steakhouse, we finally arrived ever so slightly late, a bit flustered and ready for some delicious food. With floor to ceiling windows, we were sat front and centre with a great view of the waterfront and Kings Dock. Even though it was attached to The Pullman hotel, we were both surprised with how peaceful and calm it was and it felt like it's own private restaurant.

As well as having their own menu, Wheeler's of St James's also have a special lunchtime menu in collaboration with The Pullman hotel where you can pick from a selection of classic dishes and add in a drink for a great discount. Whilst I tend to judge a restaurant by either it's steak or mac and cheese, I thought seen as we were in an incredible seafood restaurant it would be rude not to have seafood. I couldn't wait to try out the Marco Pierre White twist on the classic fish and chips, I did however decide to go without the peas as I'm not a massive fan! The fish and chips was a big winner for me, I'm not normally a massive fan of fish but the batter had a great flavour to it and the fish was perfectly cooked and had that flakiness that I love in white fish. I decided to go for triple cooked chips on the side and let me tell you triple cooked chips is the way to go! We also got a side of warm baked sourdough bread which was the perfect accompaniment for the fish and chips.

Now onto the important part....dessert! All of the desserts have the familiar feel of the Marco Pierre White menu, a great twist on a classic. I was torn between a couple of desserts, particularly the apple crumble and the Cambridge burnt cream, I ended up going for the apple crumble and Jules went for Mr White's tiramisu. The tiramisu was the perfect mixture of chocolate and coffee and arrived in a cocktail glass it was pure indulgence. The apple crumble came in a small cast iron pot with the vanilla pod ice cream on top, the mixture of the baked apples and crumble with hints of cinnamon topped with vanilla pod ice cream was the perfect finish to the meal!

I had such an incredible experience at Wheeler's of St James's, everything from the calming interior and open-air kitchen to the friendly staff that were so kind and the incredible menu. It's definitely worth travelling a little bit further outside the group of restaurants in the city centre and I can't wait to go back with some friends to try out their steaks and cocktails.

Have you been to a Macro Pierre White restaurant?
